22-23 March 2022 – Workshop ‘Responsiveness to pandemic emerging situations’
For a couple of years already, the Viruskenner program is being organized at the Istituto Tecnico Tecnologico Buonarroti in Trento, Italy. Not all students can always participate in the program, but thanks to the support of the Erasmus+ program of the European Union, we were able to compensate a little bit for that, by organizing a special two days masterclass for an enthusiastic group of students.
About forty boys and girls participated on day 1 in a pressure cooker introduction on viruses, crisis management an crisis communications. After that, it was time to start working on a case. In a fictional situation, Trento hospitals were accepting more and more patients with the same symptoms: vomiting, dizziness, diarrhea. First 1 patient, then 5, then 20. What to do?
Small groups started working on scenarios – what could be happening, what should happen to reduce public health risks, what should we tell the citizens of Trento? Luckily, it soon became clear what could be the case – all patients had attended the same party and ate the same type of hamburger.
On day 2, it was time for the groups to present their approach; what should happen and what should be communicated to the public? Each group used its own creativity, which led to 8 marvelous presentations, the one group even more rigorous in its approach than the other. Students in doctor’s coats brought serious measures to our attention, others drastically decided to close factories and quarantined whole families.
Finally, there were two big winners who left the building with a pack of typical Dutch syrup waffles. Martina, Guiseppe and Morgan produced an amazing educational video, explaining the measures they would take and explaining how you could avoid becoming ill. Luca, Domenico and Edoardo on their hand chose a complete opposite approach, which was also reason for a prize. In their presentation they made a sharp analysis of the case and argued why they would do nothing and would stay ‘chill’; don’t make a fuzz, it is not a big problem, according to the threesome.
One thing is sure: if there ever is a virus outbreak in Trento, there are sufficient people who know what to do!

Al enkele jaren organiseren we het Viruskenner programma op het Istituto Tecnico Tecnologico Buonarroti in Trento. Niet alle leerlingen kunnen daar aan meedoen. Met steun van het Erasmus+ programma van de Europese Unie konden we dat afgelopen week een beetje goed maken met een speciale tweedaagse masterclass voor een enthousiaste groep scholieren.
Zo’n veertig jongens en meisjes gaven we op dag 1 een stoomcursus virussen en een inleiding crisismanagement en -communicatie. Daarna was het natuurlijk tijd om aan de slag te gaan, met een case. In de ziekenhuizen in Trento werden steeds meer patiënten opgenomen met dezelfde verschijnselen: braakneigingen, diarree, duizeligheid. Eerst was het er 1, toen, toen 20. Wat te doen?
In kleine groepjes werd daarover verder gedacht – wat zou er aan de hand kunnen zijn, wat moest er gebeuren om gezondheidsrisico’s te beperken en wat zou je aan de inwoners van Trento moeten vertellen? Gelukkig werd al snel meer duidelijk wat de oorzaak zou kunnen zijn – alle zieken hadden op hetzelfde bedrijfsfeestje dezelfde soort hamburger gegeten.
Op dag 2 was het tijd om de aanpak te presenteren: wat zou er moeten gebeuren en wat zouden we erover moeten vertellen aan het publiek? Ieder groepje had zijn creativiteit losgelaten en dat leidde tot acht geweldige presentaties, waarbij de één nog rigoureuzer was in zijn aanpak dan de ander. Leerlingen in doktersjassen brachten met serieuze blik de ingrijpende maatregelen die zij wilden nemen, anderen hadden een speciaal nieuwsbulletin gemaakt, weer anderen sloten fabrieken en stopten hele families in quarantaine.
Uiteindelijk waren er twee grote winnaars, die met een pak stroopwafels terug het lokaal verlieten. Martina, Guiseppe en Morgan hadden een prachtige voorlichtingsfilm gemaakt, waarin ze uitlegden dat de ziekte door besmet vlees werd verspreid en waarin ze een aantal maatregelen toelichtten, die konden voorkomen dat je ook ziek werd. Luca, Domenico en Edoardo kozen een heel andere benadering. Na de presentatie van hun scherpe analyse, kozen zij er juist voor om niets te doen en vooral nuchter te blijven. Don’t make a fuzz, it is not a big problem, aldus het drietal. Eén ding is zeker: als zich ooit weer een virus aandient in Trento, weten ze daar snel genoeg wat ze moeten doen.
